Jimmy Fallon Challenges Dennis Leary in Air Hockey

In case you missed this fun shootout, Late Night host Jimmy Fallon challenged actor/comedian Dennis Leary to air hockey match during his first season as host.  To make the game a little more interesting, they used beer cans as bumpers on the table.  This was the second time the pair of comedians dueled over an air hockey table.

The short game determined who would donate $5,000 to the Cam Neely Foundation, an organization created to provide comfort, support and hope to cancer patients and their families.

Watch to see who ended up owing the charity…

A Holiday Treat That Keeps Giving: A Family Pool Table

‘Tis the season for eating, shopping and giving. It’s also a time to dedicate to the family. This time of year goes by quickly, so what about the rest of the year?  The best gift for the family might be a pool table – it’s the gift that keeps family time going year round.

Many may be surprised to learn that game rooms have grown in popularity as a good investment for the entire family.  The Boston Globe recently published an article, “Game Rooms Grow Up,” describing the rise of game rooms with pool tables front and center:

“Billiard rooms are appearing in the heart of the house. Homeowners are clearing cobwebs from attics and asking architects to cut skylights and contractors to retrofit HVAC systems to create light-filled aeries to house foosball and flat screens. And even when game areas are located in the basement, interior designers work to ensure homeowners don’t feel as though they’re underground.”

Families are interested in one thing right now: investing in family time. After the initial investment of turning a space into a game room, it can become a place for fathers, mothers, sons and daughters to build a lifetime of memories. For families with teens or tweens, a game room can serve as a hangout for their kids and friends. Plus, it doesn’t hurt to turn a drab space, like a basement or attic, into a hub of fun.

Although we at Brunswick Billiards believe that every game room needs a pool table (yes we’re biased), there are of course alternatives like air hockey, shuffleboard or foosball.  A card game table is also a nice addition for families who prefer Poker, Blackjack or any other card game. And some family game rooms may feel incomplete without a PS3, Nintendo Wii, or Xbox with a flat screen TV.

However, if you’re seeking something special for the whole family this holiday season, then consider a game room and filling it with a pool table. There is one thing we can promise, a game room with a family pool table will offer plenty of Kodak moments to help fill your family scrapbook.

Did You Know Mark Twain Loved Billiards?

The American author Mark Twain, revered for writing classic novels such as Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court and Adventures of Tom Sawyer, was a billiards lover.  In fact, there are several documents and speeches that highlight just how much Twain loved billiards. Literature enthusiasts should be thankful that Twain removed himself from a billiards table long enough to write the classic novels.

In the Mark Twain House and Museum, visitors can see the original billiards table the author played on (click link to see an image).  Twain used the billiards table to spread out his manuscripts while writing the previously mentioned novels.

In a public speech made in 1906, Twain said the following:

The game of billiards has destroyed my naturally sweet disposition. Once, when I was an underpaid reporter in Virginia City, whenever I wished to play billiards I went out to look for an easy mark. One day a stranger came to town and opened a billiard parlor. I looked him over casually. When he proposed a game, I answered, “All right.”

“Just knock the balls around a little so that I can get your gait,” he said; and when I had done so, he remarked: “I will be perfectly fair with you. I’ll play you left-handed.” I felt hurt, for he was cross-eyed, freckled, and had red hair, and I determined to teach him a lesson. He won first shot, ran out, took my half-dollar, and all I got was the opportunity to chalk my cue.

“If you can play like that with your left hand,” I said, “I’d like to see you play with your right.”

“I can’t,” he said. “I’m left-handed.” (Source: PBS)

Based on this statement, Twain was a much better author than a pool hustler.

In Twain’s autobiography, The Boys Life of Mark Twain, Albert Bigelow Paine describes Twain’s passion with billiards. After several years without a billiards table, Twain was given a pool table as an early Christmas gift by a wealthy friend, Mrs. Henry Rogers.  In fact, Paine eventually moved into the Twain’s house at that time to “continue research.”  Paine and Twain spent countless amounts of time around the billiards table, which is described in the latter half of the book.

If interested in reading the autobiography, it in the public domain and available through Google Books at no cost.

What other historical figures had a great passion for billiards?

When Cagle’s Opened the Gold Crown Table Rocked The House

A while back, we asked our dealers to send us some vintage photos to help us celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Gold Crown billiards table.   Cagle’s Billiards, a Brunswick partner located in Owings Mills, MD for more than 42 years, responded to our request and sent us some photos (below) of their opening in 1963.

Before opening Cagle’s, Jim Cagle worked for Brunswick for 15 years before choosing to open his own business with his wife, Jean.  Since Cagle’s opened, Brunswick has had an outstanding partnership with the company.

Today, Cagle’s remains a family business with Jim and Jean’s children continuing the tradition.  Cagle’s showroom displays over 27 pool tables in their showroom and offers an extensive line of accessories, that includes custom cues, balls, fitted covers, lights, wall art, and game room furniture.

As a Brunswick premiere dealer, Cagle’s has a long standing relationship with the local community working with top organization such as the Ronald McDonald House, Hopkins Children Center and Baltimore Police Pal.

The Brunswick family looks forward to the next 42 years (and beyond) of our partnership with Cagle’s.
